The Michael Jackson rehabilitation project is in full swing.
This has been the making for a near half decade with the documentary Finding Neverland sinking the pop star’s reputation into near subterranean levels. However with more and more evidence coming out with information contrary to the matter, the current counterresurgance against the pedophillia allegations is in full swing, and despite all that this movie has done more to rehabilitate his image in the public eye than any lawyer or online debunker could ever hope to accomplish.
This movie was made to remind people what made Michael Jackson such a lightning rod of the 80’s and 90’s, and they did this by focusing on the spectacle of Michael.
The Jackson 5 era is only barely acknowledged with his solo Motown records all but ignored. Four albums strategically forgotten to serve the purpose of the story.
The story is only there to loosely thread the musical numbers together, and that’s basically all it is.
A lot of criticism has been rightfully levied against the movie for it only slightly scratching the surface on the darker aspects of Michael’s story without ever actually digging in and confronting the story. We get Joseph, we get the Pepsi incident, we get Michael’s insecurities about his appearance—maybe for the latter they are saving that for the sequel to “His Story”.
But I’ll admit, I don’t want a life story out of this movie. Maybe it’s because I had much more than a base level knowledge of the Jackson story, but if I wanted to read a factual account on Michael I’d read a book or watch a documentary. If this movie did anything, I think it will, if it already hasn’t, foster interest into diving deep into Michael’s life story and discover the truth of the matter.
7/10
